Restoring Balance: Engineering a Natural Solution for Mine Water Treatment

At Shillibiers, our work often takes us into the heart of the landscape, but few projects are as environmentally significant as the recent two-month undertaking to excavate and re-lay a vital reed bed system.

The project was a rigorous exercise in combining heavy engineering with ecological sensitivity, ensuring that local watercourses remain protected from the legacy of industrial activity.

The Function: Biological Filtration

The primary objective of this project was the treatment of mine water. Before this water can be safely discharged back into the natural watercourse, it must be stripped of larger particles and heavy sediments.

The reed beds serve as a sophisticated biological filter. As the water permeates through the dense, subterranean root systems of the wetland plants, the flow is slowed, and suspended solids are naturally trapped. This process is essential for maintaining the chemical and physical integrity of the local river systems.

Precision Engineering on Challenging Ground

Working within a wetland environment requires a strategic approach to plant and machinery. To manage the excavation and subsequent re-laying within the eight-week timeframe, we utilised a specific fleet of equipment tailored for both reach and stability:

  • Excavation & Placement: The Doosan 225 and a 14-tonne Long Reach excavator provided the necessary power and extension to work across the soft spans of the beds.

  • Material Handling: Our 9-tonne dual view dumper ensured maximum visibility and safety during the transport of heavy materials, supported by a JCB Telehandler for site logistics.

  • Compaction & Finishing: A 110 Roller was used for structural preparation, while a 2.7-tonne mini digger allowed for the precise contouring required for optimal water flow.

Long-term Environmental Gains

While the immediate focus was the technical restoration of the filtration system, the long-term benefits are ecological. As the reeds re-establish themselves over the coming season, the site will transition into a robust habitat, supporting a diverse range of species and contributing to local biodiversity.
